Catch Stones Collective

Catch Stone Collective is a triad of artistic inputs and vision from dance and multi-disciplinary artists Robin Lough, Katie Wertz and Miriam Colvin based on Witsuwit’in Territory in Smithers, BC. We are friends, collaborators, mentors, and support systems to each other and our families. Our longstanding and multi-faceted relationships led to the formation of our Collective in 2020, following the deep desire to (re)connect in artistic practice and create a microcosm for inspiration in a growing unprecedented climate. Our work is guided by the value that everyone is a dancer and an artist.

Our Collective focuses on creating meaningful opportunities in the intersection of professional and community engaged practices. We carry out a practice of relationship building in creation and facilitation through community based initiatives, connecting dancers and “non-dancers” together in tasks and performances. These experiences shape our understanding of accessibility and what it means to come together in community. 

Our artistic expression(s) draw on different improvisational techniques and structures (Contact Improvisation, Ensemble Thinking) that explore authentic and honest movement. We are interested in phrasing embodied gestures, composing with the land and building on choreographic material that is inspired by the place in which we live. Our Collective finds shared language across our different training backgrounds and modalities while weaving our individual artistic processes. To ensure our work builds from a place of genuine curiosity and investment in our practices, we regularly gather in reflection around a meal.
